Avalon Photonics, Ltd. is a venture-capital funded enterprise with headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland. Previously part of CSEM (Swiss Center for Electronics & Microtechnology SA) the company was founded in June 2000 with the aim of developing and manufacturing semiconductor high-speed vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) arrays and other optoelectronic products.

Products include:

  1. High speed vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) arrays.
  2. Family of individual VCSELs, linear and 2-D VCSEL arrays operating at selective wavelengths applicable to network communication systems.
  3. 1x4 and 1x12 VCSEL array chips operating at 850nm and qualified for modulation speeds above 3.125 GB/s, and 2-D array chips with 8x8 configuration

Karlheinz Gulden Karlheinz Gulden, CEO
The CEO of Avalon Photonics is Dr. Karlheinz Gulden, who has over 13 years experience in designing high-speed semiconductor devices, crystal growth, fabrication and testing. From 1994 to 1997, Dr. Gulden was responsible for the VCSEL development at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Zurich addressing applications in sensors and optical interconnects. In 1997 he joined CSEM as Section Head of Optoelectronic Devices and has led the group since that time.
