Based in Scotland, Photonic Materials was founded in 1998 to provide a range of optical crystals for emerging internet applications. We have developed sophisticated optical crystal manufacturing technology and will provide crystal-based solutions to component manafacturers in fiber-optic telecommunications and optoelectronics.

Our priority focus is novel crystals for optical isolators and circulators, which will be deployed to route and manage light within next generation DWDM fiber-optic networks. Photonic Materials aim to be one of the industry leaders in the provision of vanadate (YVO4), a crystal that meets the needs of advanced optical components.

John Nicholls John Nicholls, Founder and CEO
John Nicholls is the founder of Photonic Materials. He completed his PhD in novel materials for optoelectronics jointly at CREOL, Florida and the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland. Prior to founding the company, he was the R&D Director with Crystal Photonics, a CREOL spin-out.
