Intel 845 Chipset Platform Overview

The Intel® Pentium® 4 processor delivers incredible performance for both consumer and corporate users. As Internet and digital media become pervasive, the Intel® NetBurst" micro-architecture powers exciting new uses in digital audio, video, photography, as well as enhanced 3D performance. For corporate users, the Pentium 4 processor offers excellent performance on today's office applications, with performance headroom (adding investment protection) for future applications.

The Pentium 4 processor was originally introduced with the support of the high-performance Intel® 850 chipset. The Intel® 845 chipset complements the 850 chipset, by offering support of high-volume, cost-effective PC133 SDRAM memory for the price-sensitive corporate users and extends the price/performance range for Pentium 4 processor systems by offering interoperable, higher bandwidth DDR200/266 SDRAM to the consumers.

Evolutionary Architecture

The 845 chipset is designed, validated, and optimized for the Pentium 4 processor with NetBurst micro-architecture using proven and established building blocks. 845 chipset-based platforms extend the Pentium 4 processor capabilities to ensure cost-effective and high volume mainstream PCs are capable of supporting advanced, and ever-evolving, end-user desktop PC usage models.

The 845 chipset consists of two controller hubs:
  • The 82845 Memory Controller Hub (MCH) supports a 400 MHz system bus, PC133/DDR200/DDR266 SDRAM memory, and the latest graphics devices through the 1.5V AGP4X interface.

  • The 82801BA I/O Controller Hub (ICH2) makes a direct connection to the graphics and memory for faster access to peripherals. It provides the features and bandwidth required for extended PC usage models. The ICH2 is already one of the highest volume PC platform products in the world, supporting motherboards based on the Intel® 815, Intel® 810, and Intel 850 chipsets.
In addition to future application support, the 845 chipset was designed with the following features to deliver a compelling solution for both corporate and consumer market segments.
  • 400 MHz system bus delivers a high-bandwidth connection between the Pentium 4 processor and the platform, providing 3x the bandwidth over platforms based on Intel® Pentium® III processors.

  • Innovative architecture enhancements such as wider data paths and flexible memory refresh technology enable optimum PC133/DDR200/DDR266 SDRAM performance.

  • Advanced packaging technology and industry leading electrical design innovations ensure long-term system reliability over wide operating conditions.

  • PC133 SDRAM extends support of the highest volume, most cost-effective memory shipping today. This allows new system price points and configuration options for Pentium 4 processor-based platforms ideal for the corporate users.

  • High memory bandwidth of DDR200/266 SDRAM extends performance-price points to the consumers and channel buyers by providing exceptional performance across the full range of multi-media and 3D intensive applications while leveraging the cost benefits and reliability of SDRAM architecture.

  • The AGP4X interface continues to provide the most advanced graphics support available, enabling over 1 GB/s of graphics bandwidth.

  • Two USB controllers provide high-performance peripherals with 24Mbps of bandwidth, while enabling support for up to four USB ports. This results in a significant increase over previous integrated 14 port hubs at 12Mbps.

  • The latest AC97 implementation delivers six channels of audio for enhanced sound quality and full surround sound capability. Integrated audio solutions continue to enjoy success as a very cost-effective, yet high-performance solution.

  • LAN Connect Interface (LCI) provides flexible network solutions such as home phone line, 10/100Mbps Ethernet, and 10/100Mbps Ethernet with LAN manageability.

  • The Intel® SingleDriver" Technology supports all three network options, which simplifies network connectivity and eases deployment.

  • Dual Ultra ATA/100 controllers coupled with the Intel® Application Accelerator, a performance software package, support faster IDE transfers to storage devices.

  • The Intel® Application Accelerator software improves system performance by improving I/O transfer rates and enables faster O/S load time resulting in accelerated boot times.

  • Communication and Network Riser (CNR) offers flexibility in system configuration with a baseline feature set that can be upgraded with an audio card, modem card, or network card.
The Intel 845 chipset offers innovative design, high-volume memory support, and configuration options that optimize performance and provide a robust, mainstream platform for the Intel Pentium 4 processor.
