Advances in server technology and enterprise software have made it possible for companies to build mission-critical solutions around open standards. By adopting an open, multi-vendor computing model rather than a closed, proprietary strategy, businesses can realize new levels of scalability, reliability, manageability, performance, and cost-effectiveness. This new approach to enterprise computing, one that employs pervasive and flexible solutions to deliver advanced capabilities, is called macroprocessing.
The following guide [PDF, 176KB] authored by CMP Media, discusses the role of Intel® server processors in an open-computing model. The Intel® Xeon processor family, available in dual-processor and multi-processor configurations, features Intel® NetBurst" microarchitecture and Hyper-Threading technology to maximize performance for midrange and high-end servers. The Intel® Itanium" processor family employs 64-bit memory addresibility and Explicitly Parallel Instruction Computing (EPIC) to perform as many as 20 operations simultaneously, making it a perfect fit for back-end servers in the most demanding, enterprise-class environments.
This CMP Media guide details four enterprise-computing scenarios, and provides recommended server configurations for each. The scenarios include:
- XML-based e-Commerce: Clustered Intel Xeon processor DP-based servers are a good fit for front-end Web servers tasked with parsing prodigious amounts of XML code. The even more powerful Intel Xeon processor MP is recommended for back-end database activities.
- Real-time business intelligence: Massive data marts and data warehouses can benefit from powerful 8-way and greater Intel Xeon processor MP-based servers. Intel Itanium processors are recommended for the most demanding real-time environments, and for supporting in-memory databases (IMDB).
- Enterprise customer relationship management: Flexible scale-up and scale-out recommended, with load-balanced 2-way servers on the front-end, and either 8-way Intel Xeon processor MP or Intel Itanium processor-based servers in the back-end.
- Extended supply chain management: Demanding XML message exchange warrants rack-mounted Intel Xeon processor-based servers at the front end. Mid-tier and back-end can be addressed by 4-way and 8-way Intel Xeon processor MP-based servers.
All of these solutions share a common thread. They employ the unmatched openness and modularity of Intel® architecture-based servers to finely tune solutions as required. Running packaged applications using open technologies like XML in n-tier environments, these solutions provide the flexibility and scalability needed to meet current and future demands.
