The Internet has transformed the role of servers in the enterprise. In the past, small numbers of mainframe and mid-frame computers worked exclusively at back-end tasks. Today servers are everywhere, from database and transaction servers to distributed "farms" of front-end Web servers that power billions of Web page views every day.

Intel recognizes that such a broad range of server demands need processors tuned to specific missions. Today, four families of Intel® processorsthe Intel® Pentium® III processor, the Intel® Xeon" processor, the Intel® Xeon" processor MP, and the Intel® Itanium® processorare available to meet the broadest possible range of missions.

Web, Application, and General-Purpose Servers
You need look no further than the massive data centers located across the globe to see how the role of servers has changed. Thousands upon thousands of powerful, compact, and economical servers are arrayed in distributed networks to serve up Web pages, enable transactions, and power applications and services. Intel Pentium III and Intel Xeon processors are designed specifically for servers in these environments.

Intel Pentium III Processor-Based Servers
For compute environments requiring high compute densities, the Intel Pentium III processor with 512KB of integrated Level 2 cache is a compelling option. Servers based on Pentium III processors deliver ample performance and reduced power consumption for demanding xSPs and large data center deployments that require small form factors. Additionally, these platforms deliver outstanding price-performance for pedestal servers running a wide range of workgroup and departmental applications.

Intel has recognized the importance of low-power server processors for some time. The recent introduction of the Pentium III processor with 512KB L2 cache has provided a superior mix of high performance, lower power consumption, and reduced thermal output for front-end servers of all types. Add to this: an advanced 0.13 micron chip manufacturing process and efficient FC-PGA2 packaging for efficient operation. The result: Low voltages and thermal output even at clock speeds above 1.0 GHz.

In November 2001, Intel introduced a new Ultra Low Voltage version of the Pentium III processor with 512KB L2 Cache on uFCBGA packaging. The new processor significantly improves on the power management and thermal output of the earlier processor, making it ideal for server blades and other ultra-dense server environments. Equally important is the low power Intel® 440GX chipset, which is ideal for these new low power Pentium III processors. This chipset addresses up to 2GB of system memory and features the same error-correcting code (ECC) used to ensure data integrity in powerful, multi-processor servers.

Intel Xeon Processor for Dual-Processor Servers
Servers based on the Intel Xeon processor running at 2.2 GHz provide the perfect upgrade path from Pentium III and Pentium III Xeon processor-based servers. A 512KB L2 Advanced Transfer Cache, along with the Intel® E7500 chipset, create a balanced platform that is ideal for delivering unparalleled price-performance, scalability, and flexibility for departmental server applications and Internet infrastructure across small as well as large corporations.

The new Intel® NetBurst" microarchitecture offers several innovations that allow the Intel Xeon processor to deliver best-in-class performance in uni-processor (UP) and dual-processor (DP) configurations. This microarchitecture features higher clock speeds, a 400MHz system bus, a Rapid Execution Engine, and an Execution Trace Cache. These features are incorporated specifically to increase performance and throughput on your current applications and build headroom for Intel Xeon processor-based server platforms to meet current and future performance needs as your business and workloads grow.

Going beyond GHz (processor core frequency), Intel is changing the landscape of server processor design and performance by including simultaneous multi-threading on the Intel Xeon processor. Intel's groundbreaking Hyper-Threading technology allows your multi-processing applications to execute more than one thread per processor, increasing the throughput of your server applications and enabling you to scale with processing requirements to handle future workloads. This technology provides immediate benefits for today's business applications.

A winning combination of Intel NetBurst microarchitecture, with its faster system bus and enhanced cache sizes, and Hyper-Threading technology, results in outstanding performance for dual-processing server applications on Internet workloads. Relative to existing Intel Pentium III processors with 512KB L2 cache based servers, the Intel Xeon processor with 512KB L2 cache based servers deliver a 25 to 30 percent increase in the number of orders processed, online requests serviced, and users supported.

The Intel Xeon Processor MP
Performance and Versatility for Mid-Range and High-End Servers

The Intel Xeon processor MP is designed specifically for 4-way and above multi-processor mid-range to back-end servers. The Intel Xeon processor MP also uses Hyper-Threading technology, allowing your multi-processing applications to execute more than one thread per processor, increasing the throughput of your server applications and enabling you to scale with processing requirements to handle rapid growth in your enterprise and e-Business. Tightly integrated features in the Intel Xeon processor MP result in increased transaction rates, faster response times, support for more users and improved availability and scalability. Running at up to 1.60 GHz with up to 1MB of Integrated Level 3 Cache, the Intel Xeon processor MP is the processor of choice for demanding e-Business and enterprise server applications.

Intel Xeon processor MP-based servers provide industry-leading compute power and throughput for e-Business and enterprise applications including: customer relationship management, application servers, collaboration, media server, site management, mid-size database, business intelligence, and supply chain management.

In clusters of 4-ways, or in 8-way or above configurations, the Intel Xeon processor MP provides the performance, dependability, versatility and value e-Business and enterprise applications demand for a large range of server needs. Servers using the Intel Xeon processor MP allow you to "Scale Right" (scale up and scale out as needed) by providing the right solution for demanding server workloads.

The Intel Itanium Processor
For the Most Demanding High-End Enterprise Applications

When your workloads grow in size and complexity, solutions are available with the Intel Itanium processor family. Powerful Itanium-based servers bring the economies of scale and value of the Intel® architecture to the highest end of the server spectrum, without sacrificing the performance, reliability, or availability needed in business-critical IT environments.

At the core of this capability is Explicit Parallel Instruction Computing (EPIC), a truly 64-bit architecture that enables the Itanium processor to perform multiple operations concurrently with greatly increased performance. The massive resources built into the processor, along with unprecedented levels of parallelism delivered by the EPIC design and virtually unlimited memory addressing, enable the Itanium processor to have industry-leading performance in targeted server segments, such as business intelligence, data warehousing and data mining, online transaction processing, and security transactions.

Software applications optimized for the Itanium processor will deliver significantly shorter cycle times and greater performance.

Intel Architecture Throughout the Enterprise
For IT departments, the arrival of the Itanium processor heralds a new era in enterprise computing: Intel now offers end-to-end server solutions across the entire IT infrastructure on Intel architecture-based platforms. The Intel Pentium III processor, Intel Xeon processor, Intel Xeon processor MP, and Intel Itanium processor address the entire spectrum of systems, from front-end Web servers to business applications to large databases.
