Intel Technology (China) LTD. employs nearly 800 employees. The plant is primarily engaged in the assembly and testing of Flash Memory, one of the most advanced and widely-used memory chips. Besides the rapid read and write speed (compared to traditional memory) Flash Memory is also able to retain contents even when the power is turned off. Intel's objective is to meet the rapidly increasing demand for Flash memory and other integrated circuit products in the world and build our China site into a world-class, high tech production base.

As a result of a successful localization plan, local staff has already taken responsibility for managing daily operations. Intel Technology (China) LTD. is Intel's third factory in Asia and the fourth assembly and testing plant worldwide.

The total land space is about 150,000 square meters (sqm), and first phase construction covers 12,000 sqm. Approved by the China central government, Intel's current investment on this project is US$198 million among which US$68 million is registered capital. It is the biggest investment project in Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone at the present time. The expansion of the Phase-One project and construction of a Phase-Two project kicked off recently and the total floor space of this site will increase from 12,000 sqm to 56,000 sqm. Floor space for the manufacturing area will increase from 3,500 sqm to 20,500 sqm. With the expansion, employment at Intel China is expected to reach 3000 by 2004.

The ground-breaking of the semiconductor assembly and testing plant of Intel Technology (China) LTD. was held in November 1996. The full commercial operation began in February - 1998, four months ahead of schedule. On May 7, 1998 - Dr. Andy Grove, Chairman of Intel Corporation, attended the factory grand opening ceremony.

Since going into production, the manufacturing volume has been ramping up rapidly due to the joint effort of both local and oversea employees. The plant has become a major Flash Memory manufacturing base for Intel, and also shows excellent performance in many areas including cost, delivery and yield. In Sept. 1999, just half year after run production, the plant acquired ISO9002 certification and because of its excellent performance in exports, Intel Technology (China) LTD. was ranked as the Number 1 exporter in the Pudong New Area. In 1999, in terms of export volume, the company was ranked first among all the foreign-invested companies in Shanghai. The National Foreign Invested Enterprise Association also named the company as the "Excellent Foreign Invested Enterprise".

The establishment of Intel Technology (China) LTD. is an important part of Intel's worldwide strategy and fully demonstrates Intels long term commitment to its China investment.
